DTTEG Update - Autumn 2026

Welcome

Our new Chair, Janine Pavlis (St Mary's University, London) welcomes you to the first DTTEG Update of the 2026/27 academic year.

Save the date: the DTTEG Symposium returns in 2027, with tickets on sale in January. This issue also brings two new reads for D&T teacher educators, each with a discount code that expires before the end of the year.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Birmingham City University in June for the 2026 Symposium, Sustainable Collaboration and Partnership.

DTTEG Symposium 2027: save the date

Tickets for the DTTEG Symposium 2027 go on sale in January 2027, alongside full details of the date, venue, theme and programme.

The symposium is our annual gathering of university- and school-based D&T teacher educators: ITE tutors, mentors, subject leads and researchers working across primary and secondary. 2027 will be our third, following Birmingham in 2025 and Birmingham City University in 2026.

Before January:

Year 8 at Shining Academy, a post-industrial Midlands school, expect D&T to follow the usual pattern: a rotation, a scheme of work and a small wooden object nobody wants. Violet Jones is counting on it. Instead, Ms Tan hands her a persona card bearing a stranger's name and a fictional town in 2050 to design for, with no steps, no worksheet and no obvious first move.

Told over eight lessons in eight episodes, one Wednesday at a time, the book is what its author, OK Kitsune, calls speculative pedagogy fiction: a story that tests a teaching idea in a realistic classroom, with no promise that it works. For teacher educators, it offers a ready-made way into discussing design fiction, open-ended briefs and the pupil's view of a D&T lesson.
